Rivet joining is widely used in the home craftsman's work. Rivets are needed to repair kitchen utensils, such as fixing a handle to a saucepan. It is also possible to eliminate the leak in the barrel using rivets. And in the automotive industry, one cannot do without rivets. A simple device can be useful for making rivets.
It is necessary
Vise, 10mm steel plates, drill, drills, aluminum wire
Instructions
Step 1
Of course, there are special tools for the production of rivets, which can be purchased at a specialized store. But sometimes it is more convenient and faster to make a device on your own. To do this, you will need a vice, metal plates, a drill, drills, and aluminum wire.
Step 2
Cut two plates of 30x50 mm from steel 10 mm thick. On the wide side, connect the plates with a hinge so that they can be folded. Weld a wire with a diameter of 6 mm to the opposite side of the plates at the level of the edges along the entire length. This is necessary in order for the device to be held in a vice while shaping the rivet head with a hammer.
Step 3
Clamp the fixture in a vice and make a hole with a diameter of 4 mm and a depth of 10-15 mm at the junction of the plates. Take a 7 mm drill bit and countersink the hole to a depth of 2 mm (you will need such a tapered socket to form the rivet head). The rivet tool is actually complete.
Step 4
Take an aluminum wire with a diameter of 4 mm, lower it to the bottom of the recess, clamp the device in a vice. Use wire cutters to bite off the wire 3-4 mm above the edge. The calculation should be such that the tapered countersink can be completely filled with aluminum.
Step 5
Gently tapping the top end of the wire with a hammer in different directions, push it into the groove. This will form the countersunk rivet head. When the countersink groove is full, release the vise and remove the finished rivet.
