Editing the edges of an image is not necessary, but it can give a photo or collage a more finished look than an image with raw edges. Basic border processing can be done with strokes, feathering, and distortion. If necessary, these methods are combined with each other.

It is necessary

  • - Photoshop program;
  • - plugin Page Curl Pro;
  • - image.

Instructions

Step 1

One easy way to define and emphasize the borders of an image is to add a stroke, a solid line along the border of the image. To process the edges this way, open the image in Photoshop and create an editable copy of the layer, or turn an uploaded image from a background into a layer.

Step 2

To duplicate a layer, use the Dublicate Layer option from the Layer menu, and to switch the image to layer mode, use the Layer from Background option from the context menu that opens after clicking on the layer.

Step 3

If the uploaded image is a layered collage, before adding a stroke, create a copy of the flattened image by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E.

Step 4

Create a stroke for the image by opening the settings window with the Stroke option from the Edit menu. To make the stroke visible, select Inside or Center in the Position field.

Step 5

Feathering is another way to quickly process the edges of a picture. To create it, select the part of the image that should not be feathering. This can be done using any of the selection tools: Rectangular or Elliptical Marquee Tool, tools from the Lasso group.

Step 6

Use the Inverse option of the Select menu to invert the selection and create a feather. To do this, use the Feather option from the Select menu. Enter a feather amount in the Radius field. The higher this value is, the more part of the processed image will become translucent. Delete the selected part of the image by pressing the Delete key.

Step 7

Create a new layer by clicking on the Create a new layer button in the layers palette. Move it under the feathered layer and fill it with a color that suits the edges of your image. If you choose a dark color for the fill, a dark vignette appears at the edges of the picture. You can fill the layer with color using the Paint Bucket Tool.

Step 8

One of the most effective ways to handle the edge of an image is to simulate a fold. It can be done using standard Photoshop tools, but it is much more convenient to do it using the Page Curl Pro plug-in, which allows you to adjust the number and location of folds, their radius, degree of curl, the appearance of the back side of the image and the nature of the shadow. When Page Curl Pro is set by default, the option that opens this plug-in's settings window can be found in the AV Bros group of the Filter menu.
