One of the most spectacular and at the same time difficult materials in processing is the atlas. It is difficult to cut it, because it spreads and warps, it is difficult to sew, as it easily forms puffs that cannot be eliminated, the edges are constantly crumbling, and the details tend to stretch. To sew beautifully, you need to learn how to properly process the atlas.

It is necessary

  • - an old blanket or bedspread;
  • - pins;
  • - gelatin;
  • - candle or lighter;
  • - non-woven tape (cobweb);
  • - bias binding, satin ribbon.

Instructions

Step 1

Place an old blanket or bedspread on the table before you start cutting the satin fabric. Then spread the satin fabric over the top, making sure that the hem runs evenly and matches the edge of the table or blanket. Pin the cut with pins in several places, then pin the pattern on top. With soap or chalk, draw out the outlines of the part (you can also use a pencil, but keep in mind that it will be very difficult to wash it off from some types of atlas). Cut very carefully, preferably without breaking the pins.

Step 2

To prevent the fabric from crumbling during sewing, process the edges with a gelatin solution (except for white satin) or burn with fire (using a lighter or candle). Please note that these measures cannot be permanent, they will only help while sewing.

Step 3

To keep the edge strong for a long time, glue non-woven tape around the edge, while using a fabric or knitted spider web. Such a measure is especially necessary if the atlas is not of very good quality, and when trying to push the lobar threads apart, a gap is visible. In this case, glue the tape so that it overlaps the seam by 1-2 mm.

Step 4

You can sew the details with a double "French stitch": first sew on the front side, carefully trim the edge (usually no more than 5 mm), then turn out and sew again as it should - on the wrong side, so that the raw edge is inside.

Step 5

It is necessary to sew two parts from the satin so that they do not stretch, but at the same time do not overtighten, for this, baste them by hand before machine stitching, you can even use an oblique seam (so that the fabric does not have the ability to gather on a thread).

Step 6

Trim the satin edges with a satin ribbon, bias tape, or overcast blind stitch. If you decide to just fold the hem, be very careful, especially if it is cut obliquely. First fold the edge in one layer, baste and iron. Only then hide the edge inward and sew (by hand or by machine), while keeping in mind that thin types of satin are very sensitive to ironing, and ironing can bring all the imperfections of the seam to the front side.
