Antique hats are very popular in entourage costumes, fashion shows, theatrical performances, various scenes and reconstructions of various ancient events. The top hat is one of such aristocratic headdresses, which, due to its character and originality, is often used in photo shoots, and is also used as part of a costume at historical balls, social events, and of course in theatrical performances. In this article, you will learn how to sew a top hat for yourself at home.
Instructions
Step 1
Draw a pattern for the three elements of the future cylinder - the bottom, crown and brim. Cut your pattern out of paper or cardboard.
Step 2
The length of the crown should be equal to the circumference of the head, as well as the circumference of the bottom, and the height should correspond to the desired height of the cylinder (for example, 15 cm). The width of the margins of the cylinder is 4-5 cm, and wedges must be cut from the inside of the margins to glue the margins into the crown.
Step 3
Prepare the base for the cylinder - take 10 layers of gauze and saturate it with diluted PVA glue, spreading it with a wide brush, damp roller or hand. After the glue dries, you can iron the prepared gauze through the fabric.
Step 4
Choose a fabric for the cylinder - stretch velvet or stretch knit are best.
Step 5
Transfer the patterns to a glued gauze cloth and cut out the details. Tie a thin steel wire to the outside edge of the brim for stiffness. Bend the corners for attaching the crown up.
Step 6
Start wrapping the fabric over the cylinder parts. Cut a long, narrow strip of stretch velvet that is twice the width of the brim and the length is equal to the circumference of the head. Sew the strip into a tube and pull that tube over the margins. Glue the upper side of the fields from the inside out with a small amount of PVA and press down.
Step 7
To cover the crown with fabric, take velvet with a length equal to the circumference of the head, and the width equal to the height of the crown, and then take exactly the same piece of lining fabric. Sew the lining fabric and the front velvet together from the inside out.
Step 8
Sew on the lining, slightly stepping back from the bottom edge, a bodice tape. Sew the fabric and pull it over the crown. Using paper clips and brim wedges, connect the crown to the brim, tucking the edge of the lining outward of the crown. At the fold, sew the edges of the crown to the edges of the brim.
Step 9
Sew the backing and the front side of the bottom of the cylinder, pull over the workpiece and iron. Place the bottom on the cylinder and carefully sew it by hand with a blind stitch.
