The papier-mâché technique provides tremendous opportunities for the realization of creative fantasies. How many strange, funny and interesting things you can do yourself if you have paper, glue and paints at hand.
It is necessary
- - plasticine 2-3 packages
- - large plastic bottle
- - old newspapers
- - White paper
- - PVA glue
- - a piece of gauze approximately 30x30cm
- - white acrylic primer
- - brushes
- - paints (acrylic, tempera, oil)
- - elastic thin cord, rubber vein
Instructions
Step 1
Before starting work, determine the shape and size of the mask, what it will have a mouth, nose. Choose a drawing on the Internet or come up with and draw an image yourself. It is advisable to draw a life-size drawing of the future mask, this will help in the work when you sculpt the base of the mask.
Step 2
From plasticine based on a plastic five-liter bottle with a cut off top, start sculpting the base shape of the future mask. Knead the plasticine in your hands and glue it to the bottle in small pieces, focusing on the drawing. Form the eyes, eyebrows, nose, open or closed mouth, lips, chin at the mask. You can use your facial expressions while looking in the mirror while working. Try not to sculpt small details, otherwise they will be lost when you paste over the mask with paper. Periodically check the size of the mask base against the picture.
Step 3
Having finished sculpting the base, start forming the mask using the papier-mâché technique. This work is best done at a table covered with plastic or oilcloth so as not to stain the furniture. You can remove the plasticine base or leave it on the bottle.
Step 4
Pull the newspapers into narrow strips. Dampen the gauze with water and place it on the plasticine base. Smooth the cheesecloth with your hands so that there are no wrinkles. Soak pieces of newspaper in water and spread them slightly overlapped on top of cheesecloth. If the mouth of the mask is open, you can spread the pieces of newspaper directly around the mouth without covering it, or you can make the mask in one piece and cut the mouth out when the mask is dry.
Step 5
Lightly dilute PVA glue with water and spread it on the first newspaper layer. Lay the second layer on top and coat it with glue. So make 3-4 layers. Make the last layer of white paper and glue it on top with glue. Dry the mask in a dry room for 1-2 days. Never dry the mask near the battery, otherwise it may crack.
Step 6
Remove the dried mask from the base, attach it to your face and see what extra edges need to be trimmed. Trace the outlines with a pencil or felt-tip pen. Using a cutter, trim off the excess edges of the mask, cut out the eyes, mouth. Cover all cut edges of the mask with white paper dipped in glue to give it extra strength. Dry the mask again.
Step 7
Prime the mask with acrylic primer to hide any unevenness. Dry the mask. When the mask is completely dry, paint it, make holes on the sides with an awl and thread the elastic cord.
