Step 1
Conifer cones are a fertile material for creativity, with which you can create amazing crafts and home decorations. Despite the rigidity and static shape, bizarre compositions can be created from cones. In order to change the shape of the cone, it is recommended to soak it in warm water, then tie it with wire or strong rope and dry thoroughly.
Step 2
To make a basket, you will need about 50-60 pieces of pine cones. The collected material must be sorted: the most beautiful baskets are obtained by combining open and closed cones. To prevent the closed cone from changing its shape in the warmth of the house, it is recommended to coat it with a liquid solution of wood glue - this will help fix the scales, avoid deformation of the finished product and give the cones a slight shine. If you want to give the product an unusual look, you can pre-place the bumps in the bleach for a period of 5 to 10 hours. The cones lose their color, but they close during the bleaching process, therefore, to obtain open scales, the cones are placed in a warm oven for a while or placed on a hot battery.
Step 3
The simplest option for making a basket is to assemble rings from cones that serve as the walls of the product. Rings can be of the same size or different - in this case, you get a basket with a wide bottom and a narrow top. The cones are connected together in a circle using a thin, flexible wire. The short end of the wire is fixed in the middle of the first bump, firmly connected to the long end, which is wrapped around all subsequent bumps. The ring is formed in such a way that the open scales of the cones are directed towards the inside of the future basket. The depth of the product will depend on the number of rings made. The rings are placed on top of each other and fastened together either with glue or with a vertical wire tie.
Step 4
To make the handle of the basket, a half-ring is prepared, the cones of which, for high reliability, are recommended to be connected with two rows of thin wire. The handle is fixed on the sides of the basket; a circle cut from cardboard is used as the bottom. The finished product can be varnished or decorated with ribbons, beads, fruits or flowers.
Step 5
A more difficult option is to make a basket, the base of which is a bottom made of five cones arranged in the form of a flower around the central cone. The cones are placed with scales inward and fastened together with a wire or strong thread. The first row of sidewalls are assembled by placing the buds at a 45 degree angle to the bottom. In the next rows, the cones are placed straight, without a slope. The height of the basket will depend on the number of rows harvested. A basket handle is made from 5-6 cones placed on a thick wire frame. The handles, collected from cones, turned by open scales in one direction or the other, look the most original.
