Step 1
Find the right cardboard for your work. For further priming, it is important to choose a method that takes into account the quality of the material. It directly depends on the components from which the cardboard is made. For example, gray rag board has good elasticity and density, while wood board is usually white or yellowish in color, and it is quite brittle. Note that sunlight will fade gray cardboard and yellow cardboard. Therefore, whitewash and chalk are used for priming. Usually, artists choose the best types of rag or wood board, about 3-5 mm thick. It does not rot or crack.
Step 2
Be sure to provide adequate soil quality. Primer is the first coat that is applied to the painting material and sits directly under the paint. Strong and elastic, it closes the pores of the cardboard, gives a uniform density and a slightly rough surface, which, in turn, ensures optimal adhesion to the paint layer of the painting. So it will be better preserved, it will be resistant to environmental influences.
Step 3
Use wood glue to prime thin board. Many artists primer cardboard on their own using the types of primer they use on canvas. For example, saturate the cardboard with boiled oil (linseed oil) and let the sheet dry for 2-3 weeks. Then cover in one or two coats with white oil and dry well. Lightly sand the surface with sandpaper. The cardboard processed in this way does not warp, it is pleasant to work on it, the paints lie flat and do not fade over time.
Step 4
Try to prime the cardboard with PVA emulsion, which should be prepared from glue and water in a ratio of 1:10 or 1:15. Glue the face of the cardboard once or twice, dry, and then prime. The mass for priming includes 1 weight part of PVA, 2 - 4 weight parts of water, 3/4 weight part of dry zinc oxide and 3/4 weight part of chalk. Apply it to the cardboard once evenly using a bristle flute or stiff brush. Let the soil dry well for 1-2 days. Then cover your cardboard base with a second layer, for the preparation of which you will need: 1 part by weight of gelatin; 15-17 parts by weight of water; 0, 4 weight part of PVA; 2 parts by weight dry zinc oxide; 2 parts by weight of chalk. And also it is necessary to purchase an antiseptic - sodium pentachlorophenolate, which is 0.01 parts by weight in the mixture. Such a mass is prepared when priming the canvas.
Step 5
To prevent the cardboard from warping, prime it on both sides. The reverse side is often covered with a thin layer of natural beeswax, which is previously dissolved in turpentine at a temperature of 40-50 ° C. This wax solution is applied with a flute. It can also be primed with an aqueous solution of PVA glue in a ratio of 1:10.
