Instructions

Step 1

Sew or buy a plain Ukrainian shirt. Choose a linen or cotton garment slightly larger than your usual size. Wash the shirt so that it does not shrink when the embroidery is done. Iron.

Step 2

Select the motif you want to embroider. Pay attention to two points: ornament and technique. Geometric patterns (crosses, circles, zig-zags), images of plants (flowers, grapes, oak) and animals (roosters, hares, deer) are most often used for embroidery of shirts. As for the embroidery method, there are a great many of them, but the simplest and most recognizable is the cross stitch. Patterns for embroidery of the Ukrainian shirt ornament can be found on the Internet. Traditionally, the collar area, the front edge of the shirt and the shoulder part of the sleeve are embroidered. The color scheme depends on your imagination, the main colors in the embroidered shirt are red and black.

Step 3

Choose the thread you will be embroidering with. It is best to use regular floss. Wash them gently in lukewarm water before embroidering, as reds can fade and stain the fabric of the shirt. Rinse with softened water. Dry the threads.

Step 4

Get a special patch canvas - water soluble or removable. Sew the strips of the desired size on the sleeve sections, the collar area with basting stitches. At the end of the work, the canvas can be removed by pulling out individual threads, or it will dissolve during washing (if you are using the instant version).

Step 5

Hoop the embroidery area of the shirt into the hoop, and then pull up the edges. Start working, make sure that the direction of the drawing corresponds to the cut of the shirt. First embroider the details of the base color, then add other colors. Remove the threads of the canvas from the finished product, wash at 30 degrees. Iron.
