Today, when even in small supermarkets souvenirs are engraved with a laser, hand engraving has become a rare, but still in demand service. Craftsmen charge more for hand engraving than laser engraving. But you can do without their services if you learn to engrave on metal yourself.

Instructions

Step 1

Disassemble the failed tape recorder or CD player. Use all the parts removed from it at your discretion, except for one - the collector motor for moving the reading unit or rewinding the tape. This engine has one valuable quality compared to similar products from toys: its bearing, located on the back side, is not polystyrene, but steel. Due to this, it does not fail when both radial and axial forces are applied to the shaft.

Step 2

Slide the small collet onto the motor shaft. Clamp in it a worn-out dental bur that is no longer suitable for its intended purpose. This tool will be presented to you in any dental clinic.

Step 3

Build a series circuit from a DC voltage source that is slightly below the rated voltage for the motor (this source should be rated for a current of about 500 mA), a pedal with a momentary switch and a motor. It is advisable to observe the polarity indicated on the motor. In parallel with the motor, connect a paper or ceramic capacitor of any capacity. Insulate all connections so that at the moments of shutdown you do not receive unpleasant shocks with self-induction voltage, accidentally touching live parts.

Step 4

Place the pedal on the floor. A serious drawback of this type of engine is overheating during long-term operation, even at idle speed. Therefore, turn it off with the pedal even for short breaks in operation (from a few seconds).

Step 5

Develop your style of work gradually, experimentally choosing the pressure of the shaft when engraving various metals in such a way that its rotation does not distort the shape of the lines. Remember that the softer the metal, the less wear and tear on the bur. When it is worn out completely, replace it. As you practice, strive to learn how to write on metal in the same handwriting as you would normally write with a pen on paper. Exercise on non-valuable metal objects.

Step 6

At the end of the work, disconnect the power supply from the mains.
