Metal engraving has been known since the beginning of the first millennium BC. It was originally used to decorate weapons. Later, engraving began to be applied to musical instruments, utensils and objects such as watches and brooches to decorate them or leave the initials of the owner. For engraving, you need to stock up on a set of special devices and remember a few simple rules.

Step 1

To engrave small parts, you need to make an engraving pad. To do this, cut out two Ø20cm circles from leather or tarpaulin. Leaving 5mm allowances, sew the circles twice. Leave a short distance open for packing. Rinse and dry the river sand. Pour it into the pillow through the funnel, stuffing it as tightly as possible. Now you can sew up the hole you left.

Step 2

Learn to hold the cutter correctly. Place your index finger on top of the very tip of the blade. Support the blade from the side with your thumb. Press the handle of the incisor to the palm of your hand with your middle, ring and little fingers. The tip of the blade should protrude from under the index finger no further than 5 - 7mm when using the attachment. With your left hand, press the product against the pillow. The thumb of the right hand should rest against the product, and the index finger should adjust the cutting depth. Always point the cutter away from you, keeping its direction in the hand unchanged. At the same time, turn the product towards it.

Step 3

Perform several exercises on different steel or copper plates to identify the technical capabilities of the different cutters. It is convenient to draw wide straight lines with incisors with an oval or round section, and rounded ones with a square one. Note that if the cutter point is too raised or the sharpening angle is greater than 45 °, the tool will jump off all the time. And if the sharpening angle is too sharp, it will break, burrowing into the metal. To eliminate these shortcomings, exercise, select the desired sharpening angle.

Step 4

Move the cutter without tension when removing the chips. If burrs appear on the surface of the ductile metal, remove them with a scraper. Make it from a triangular file by grinding off a notch from the edges. Before engraving, clean the metal surface with fine-grained emery paper and polish with a polishing paste. Draw a drawing with a glass-writing pencil and secure it with a quick-drying varnish.
