Museum Night is an annual international event dedicated to Museum Day and has been running since 1997. The first such event took place in Berlin. Hundreds of other cities around the world have taken the baton. Since then, every year millions of such institutions and art sites open their doors to everyone who wants to visit this or that exhibition or event for free. Most cultural institutions prepare special programs for this action, excursions, one-day exhibitions, concerts, lectures and other events.

The aim of the action is to attract as many visitors as possible, especially young people, as well as to demonstrate the achievements and potential of modern museums.

Typically, Museum Night takes place in mid-May on Saturday-Sunday night. Officially, it starts at 6 pm and ends at midnight, but many museums close their doors at 2 am. Some work until 6 am.

In Russia, the first Night of Museums was organized by the Krasnoyarsk Cultural Center in 2002. Moscow joined the action in 2007. The popularity of the festival is growing exponentially. In 2011, about 200 different cultural institutions took part in it in Moscow. Among other things, farmsteads and major parks take part in the action: cultural and entertainment events and concerts are held there. And even the Moscow Metro does not stand aside: concerts of classical music are held at several stations. For the convenience of visitors, special bus routes are organized in the capital. So, one of the routes runs along the Garden Ring.

In 2012, the Night of Museums will take place on the night of May 19-20. The museum workers took into account the experience of previous years and tried to do everything to prevent colossal queues. For this, the monitoring of the workload of the most popular museums will be carried out. In addition, everyone who wants to visit one of the 10 most popular art sites can get a ticket in advance with the time of the visit by registering on the official website.
