American cinema appeared almost at the same time as the birth of world cinema. Thomas Edison is a truly iconic figure of that time. Thanks to his efforts, the first film studio in the United States was created.
Thomas Edison is the father of American cinema
The Lumière brothers went down in history as the creators of the first film that was shown on the screen to a wide range of viewers. However, even they admitted that Thomas Edison made a huge contribution to the invention of cinema. The kinetoscope invented by him marked the beginning of his independent activity in the nascent film industry.
In 1892, Thomas Edison created the first film studio, which consisted of only two rooms. There was a special stage and a control room, and the movie camera moved along the rails.
"Edison's standard" - this name was given to celluloid film, 35 mm wide.
Edison was a very enterprising man. He was able to immediately discern the huge prospects that cinema opens up for him. Edison began funding promising projects and helped distribute the first motion pictures in the United States.
The birth of a legend
At the beginning of the 20th century, many small film studios appeared in the United States that tried to make money on the filming of films.
In those years, Los Angeles was considered a province, and Hollywood was an ordinary rural suburb, no different from the rest. However, it was almost always sunny in the area. It turned out that now the filmmakers would not be so dependent on the vagaries of the weather. Building a movie studio in Hollywood was just a brilliant idea. Prairies, scenic views, rolling hills, and the Pacific coastline were perfect for capturing large-scale scenes.
The official date for the start of film production in Hollywood is considered to be 1907.
In 1913, the Western Indian Husband was released, directed by Cecil B. de Mille, which is considered to be the beginning of Hollywood.
Since then, the film industry in the United States began to develop at a frantic pace. Already in the 1920s, the most powerful film companies appeared in Hollywood: MGM, Universal, Columbia, MGM, 20th Century Fox and many others.
The main genres of cinema of that time were: westerns, melodramas, comedies and animated films.
Currently, American cinema is the trendsetter in world cinema fashion. It is here that the highest-grossing films are shot, which use innovative technologies.
Despite the fact that many Hollywood films are primitive and do not carry any meaning, the mass audience still prefers American cinema.
