Step 1
If you are a novice hunter, do not hesitate to choose the most famous type of hunting smoothbore rifle - the horizontal double-barreled shotgun. This type of weapon is easy to use, has two triggers, which is very convenient when firing from two barrels. The optimal caliber for a beginner is 12, bullets of this caliber have a large mass of shot, which means that it has a large spread, so you will not be so afraid of flaws in aiming. A gun for a beginner hunter should be universal, that is, have such a muzzle restriction so that it is possible to shoot both bullets and shot, which means that it should hunt any game.
Step 2
If you are going to hunt birds, choose a 12-gauge gun, for hunting small fur game - 28 and 32-gauge, deer and mountain goats are hunted with a 20-gauge gun. You can go for a bear with a 12 gauge smoothbore gun, but only if you plan to shoot from a maximum of 50 meters, for farther shooting at such large prey you will need a rifled gun.
Step 3
Use lighter guns in summer than in winter. If you are hunting in open areas, choose a gun with a longer barrel, if you are going to hide in the bushes, get a short-barreled gun.
Step 4
The good thing about a double-barreled gun with a separate start is that it can be simultaneously loaded with two different cartridges, that is, at any time you will have a choice of what to shoot, this will significantly increase the chances of shooting game.
Step 5
Take a closer look at single-barreled guns. Their advantage is that they are much lighter than double-barreled guns, which can be critical if you are going to spend the whole day on your feet with a gun. Also among hunters there is an opinion that a single-barreled gun teaches discipline, since you only have one shot, you will aim better and improve your hunting skills faster. On the other hand, a novice hunter will often miss with such a weapon, and it will not be possible to correct a miss with a second shot.
Step 6
If you don't want to reload your shotgun yourself all the time, check out the automatic and semi-automatic reloading models. The automatic reloads completely independently due to the removal of a part of the powder gases, its disadvantage is that when the gases are removed, the force of the battle decreases. In semi-automatic rifles, the cartridge is sent to the chamber by twitching the bolt. Automatic and semi-automatic models are more difficult to maintain and break more often.
