Nowadays, making candles at home has become popular. The necessary thing for this is a wick. It can be extracted from off-the-shelf, store-bought candles, but it is not always of good quality. Therefore, you can make a wick yourself.
It is necessary
- Thick cotton thread (twine, plait or floss is also suitable) about 30 cm long
- Salt - 2 tablespoons
- Borax - 4 tbsp. l.
- 1.5 cups water
- Soaking dishes
- Wax melting utensils
- Clip for paper
- Wax
Instructions
Step 1
Pour one and a half cups of warm water into a cup or other dish, dissolve 2 tbsp. tablespoons of salt and 4 tbsp. l. borax. Soak the thread or rope in this solution for 15 minutes.
Step 2
After soaking, hang the thread on a clothesline in a dry place. To completely dry the thread, let it hang for five days.
Step 3
Melt the wax in a specially prepared container. Secure the thread with a paper clip. Dip it in melted wax 3-4 times. It is necessary that the future wick is completely covered with wax. Then hang it up again on the clothesline to dry. In a few minutes, the hand-made wick will be ready.
Step 4
To make a candle, cut the desired length, not forgetting to make a reserve. You can store the finished wick rolled up in a skein.
Step 5
You can add one teaspoon of chemicals to the wick soak mixture to create a colored fire. For example, strontium chloride will give a red flame, table salt - bright yellow, borax - yellow-green, potassium nitrate - purple.
