Every person has the desire to capture rare events, or vice versa, often occurring, but very effective. However, even a photograph of a drop of water for the first few times is not very beautiful, not to mention being able to photograph lightning at the moment of discharge from the first time.
Instructions
Step 1
Set the shutter speed on the camera to a higher value, in many models there is such an option. If it is absent, use the 'Exposure' option, it must be reduced to minus, and the 'ISO sensitivity' option, it must be raised, but not too much so that the photo does not become grainy. The duration of a lightning discharge is less than a second, so you won't be able to take a picture of it purely physically, and you need to apply similar tricks with exposure and sensitivity (technically, with shutter speed).
Step 2
Use a series of shots, almost any 'point-and-shoot' is equipped with this function. The maximum number of frames and a small delay between them (1-2 seconds) will work. This will increase the chance of 'catching' a lightning strike. Switch the lens to infinity, this is an option that adds clarity to the farthest objects in the image instead of the closest ones.
Step 3
Place the camera on a tripod stand, turn on a burst of shots and wait. Shooting stops after the number of shots you specify has been taken, so you need to start the burst several times. Lightning usually strikes in the same place - you can choose the shooting direction by the first unimaged flash. Do not hold the camera in your hands at all, but use a stand or tripod - since you use tricks with exposure and shutter speed, the slightest movement will blur the photo.
Step 4
Take a video if you are trying to catch lightning during the day, as tricks will flood the photo with white. The video 'eats up' a lot of space on the camera's memory card, about 100 megabytes in one minute, and therefore it is worth shooting in bursts, filming for 30 seconds, and if there was no lightning, delete the video and start over. Then, by frame-by-frame processing on a computer, select the pictures with lightning and save them as separate images.
