Instructions
Step 1
Find an embroidery motif. To work with a satin stitch, a stalk or a chain stitch, you need a pattern with clear boundaries. If you want to cross-stitch a picture, choose a pattern or purchase a canvas with a printed pattern.
Step 2
Transfer the satin stitch or other stitches other than a cross to the fabric. If you are cross stitching, mark out the canvas. To do this, lay lines with a basting seam through an equal number of crosses, they will help you check the correctness of the pattern. As the work progresses, you will remove these threads.
Step 3
Pick up the material. The composition of the fabric can be anything. It is more pleasant, of course, to embroider on natural linen, but a slight inclusion of synthetics will provide greater durability to the product. You can choose white or colored material, but it is desirable that it be solid. For cross stitching, select a coarse weave, such as coarse linen, specialty or removable canvas, which will be placed on top of regular fabric and pulled out when finished.
Step 4
Purchase embroidery thread. If you are using a chart, read the shade names for each cross symbol. Sometimes tables contain a numeric number. This is especially common when embroidery is done with floss threads. Pay attention to the manufacturer's name. If you have threads of another production, use the tables for translation of threads for floss, they are freely available on the Internet. So you can choose the right shade as accurately as possible.
Step 5
For satin stitching, use unevenly dyed threads, they change the intensity of the color in some areas. This will allow you to create smooth transitions from light to dark on individual details, such as petals.
Step 6
Hoop the fabric. This device will prevent thread pulling and deformation of the fabric.
Step 7
Use special embroidery needles, there are different tools for different techniques. A needle with a long, not very wide eye and a rather blunt end is well suited for cross stitching. For satin stitching, select a sharp needle with a small eye. To avoid pricking your index finger while sewing, use a thimble.
Step 8
Mark the place where you want to start work. It can be one of the corners or the middle. On cross-stitching patterns, arrows often mark the center, if you fold the fabric in half twice, you can find the desired weave of threads.
Step 9
Tie a knot in the thread, bring the needle to the right side and start sewing. You can also learn knot-free sewing techniques.
