Lapti is a traditional Russian shoe that was fairly widespread until the 1930s. It was woven from bark, birch bark or hemp. For strength, the sole was braided with a vine or rope. The bast was tied to the leg with ropes or laces twisted from bast.

Instructions
Step 1
Making bast sandals from bast is a traditional winter peasant craft, but in our time it is not difficult to weave bast shoes. Prepare the bast in advance, preferably from spring to mid-summer. You will need the bark of young lindens: cut the trunk low, rip the bark and take out the core. Roll the bast into a circle and tie.
Step 2
Cut the bast into strips 12 mm wide. For softness, remember it on a crush and remove the top brown layer, but make sure that the white bast does not become too thin. For one bast shoe you will need six lyk.
Step 3
Start weaving from the insole. Take two bast in your right hand and two in your left. Interlace them in the middle. Now pull the top ends down - there should be 4 ends in each hand. Braid the ends like a regular pigtail: take the bast on the right one by one, the bast on the left, and intertwine with the barks that meet on the way. The same bast, for example the left one, should always lie on top at the beginning of a new row.
Step 4
The insole should be 6 mm longer than the last. Put the workpiece on the block: there should be 4 barks on the left and right. Tie the middle of the heel to the thread, which in turn tie to the nail on the block. Shape the toe: take the middle bast - two on the left and two on the right. Weave them together. The first four squares will mark the sock, now place the remaining pairs of barks in the rows on the right and left. Pull all eight barks evenly so that the cells fit snugly against the last.
Step 5
Start shaping your heel. Collect all the barks from the back of the shoe and put them in a handful. Separate the upper bars on the left and right sides one at a time and weave them with a bun towards the heel with a second layer. Make no mistake in finding the beginning of the row that will bring the bast exactly to the middle of the heel. Now weave the remaining bars on the left and right. As a result, the bast shoe will have eight lyk. Take the four middle ones and weave them together, gradually taking away the rest.
Step 6
Shape the sides. The upper bast - the most extreme - unfold at a right angle, weave it between the rest and weave it over the insole. In the same way, weave the second bast between the two remaining ones. Interlace the third bast with the fourth, and the last with stretched from toe to heel. Go to the other side and weave the barks in the same way. If there are not enough basic lines, introduce new ones. Now reinforce the sock by making an extra layer. Tuck in the protruding ends. Braided bast is ready.
Step 7
Bast shoes can be crocheted from hemp rope. Cast on 12 air loops and close them in a ring. Round 5 rows with single crochet stitches. Knit eight stitches with single crochet (five rows). Sixth row - 2 single crochet, 1 single crochet, 2 double crochet, 1 double crochet, 2 single crochet. Pull the last row on a thread - you get a bast shoe back. Sew the toe cap additionally. The bast is ready.
Step 8
Bast shoes can be knitted. Cast on 12 loops and knit a garter-stitched fabric about 8x20 cm. Fold about 5 cm of the fabric so that you get a pocket, and sew the sides. Sew on the heel counter, raising it a few centimeters. Pull the rope along the hedge - with its help, the bast will be tied to the leg. This completes the work.
