Over time, any furniture can lose its attractive appearance or get bored. You don't have to go to a restorer or shop to deal with both problems. You can decorate the item with your own hands using paint, napkins or mosaics. Try these easy ways on your old favorite dresser.
Instructions
Step 1
To radically change the look of your dresser, paint it with paints. If the old finish is in poor condition, clean it and prime the wood to help the paint lay down better. Use a roller, brush or spray can to coat the surface with the base color. Wait until it dries completely.
Step 2
At this time, prepare a sketch of the pattern. If you are not sure that you can repeat it on the dresser, just peeping at the piece of paper with a hint, copy it piece by piece. Draw a sketch into squares. Apply the same mesh, but on a larger scale, to the dresser with a washable marker. Duplicate the lines of the drawing in each square.
Step 3
You can also make a cardboard stencil. You will need to cut out those parts of the picture that should be filled with paint of the same color. In the case of complex multi-color drawings, it will be more practical to use the first method.
Step 4
Using hard brushes of different thicknesses, paint the pattern onto the dresser. First, paint over the largest areas that you want to fill with one color. Then complement the decor with small details.
Step 5
You can give a painted dresser a vintage look using the craquelure technique. After the first coat of paint has dried, apply a one-step crackle varnish. At the same time, do not touch the areas that have already been treated with a brush with varnish again.
Step 6
Wait until the varnish is dry enough that your finger does not stick to it. Cover the dresser with a second color. During the drying process, it will crack and the base shade will be visible in the cracks.
Step 7
To decorate only part of the dresser, use a mosaic. It can be bought as a ready-made kit or assembled from old pieces of tiles, shells, buttons, etc. Cover a small section of the dresser with glue suitable for the material the mosaic is made of. Lay out its fragments in rows. The space between the tiles can be filled with tile grout.
Step 8
Transfer a drawing from a paper napkin you like to the dresser. Take napkins for decoupage or any other, cut out the necessary pattern with scissors. Place it on the chest of drawers, cover the top with decoupage glue using a soft brush. When the applique is dry, you can protect it with a glossy or matte varnish.
