More and more parents are choosing environmentally friendly materials in children's accessories. Given this factor, sellers often inflate prices for toys made from natural materials. To give your child the best and at the same time save money, make wooden blocks for the child with your own hands.
Instructions
Step 1
Such toys can be assembled from wooden planks, chipboard or plywood. Draw six squares with a side of 7 cm on the prepared boards. You can make the cubes smaller or larger (it depends on the child's age) - the toy should fit in his hand.
Step 2
Measure the thickness of the board you will be cutting the pieces from. Add this number of millimeters in the drawing to two of the six squares (increase the length of each side). This is necessary so that the two parts hold the other four together.
Step 3
Use a fine-toothed hacksaw to cut out all six parts. To prevent your child from scratching the jagged edges of the cube, try to make them as smooth as possible with sandpaper.
Step 4
Wipe the sanded workpieces with a cloth and glue. Find the right adhesive for the material you are using - for example, wood glue for different types of wood. Draw a thin line on the top and bottom sides of each of the two large squares. Then insert the top and bottom edges of the cube between them. Press down on the parts and hold them without moving for a few minutes until the glue sets. The exact time can be found on the packaging of the glue. Then apply the compound to the edges of the two remaining pieces and insert them into the frame. Leave the cube to dry for a day.
Step 5
To make the toy educational, you can paint it. Make alphabet cubes. On one side, you can write a letter, on the second - write a word that begins with it, on the third - make a drawing denoting this concept. Use acrylic paint to paint the cubes. Draw the outline of the drawing with a pencil, then paint it with undiluted acrylic using a stiff synthetic brush. A few hours after painting, when the paint is dry, the cube can be coated with acrylic varnish. To make the decoration safer for the child's health (paint particles can peel off from the toy), the drawing can be burned on wood using a special tool. Linden or birch planks are best suited for this.
