Gouache is the name of paints and painting techniques at the same time. This is a relatively inexpensive and interesting material that is great for mastering the basics of painting. Drawings made in gouache dry quickly, and mistakes are easily corrected.

It is necessary

  • - a sheet of cardboard;
  • - round and flat brushes;
  • - gouache;
  • - palette for mixing paints;
  • - containers (glasses, jars) for water;
  • - water.

Instructions

Step 1

Draw a sketch on cardboard with a simple pencil. Be careful not to press down on the pencil when sketching. Thin light lines can be easily painted over with paint, and dark and thick ones cannot always be hidden under a layer of gouache.

Step 2

Stir the gouache thoroughly until smooth. It is better to do this on a palette, where it is convenient to select the desired shade. Pay attention, if the paint turns out to be "liquid", then after drying the layer will be transparent and unevenly colored. And if it is too "thick", then when gouache is applied to paper, bumps are formed, the paint, after drying, may crack and crumble. The ideal consistency of diluted gouache is similar to heavy cream or sour cream.

Step 3

With the first layer of gouache, paint the background of the picture and the most saturated parts of the picture. In order not to accidentally overstep the edges of image fragments when coloring, start working along the paths. Then move from edge to center. If you accidentally climbed over the edge of the sketch, then the excess paint can be easily removed with a damp, but not wet, brush or paper swab.

Step 4

If you need to apply one layer of gouache on top of another, be sure to wait until the first layer is dry, and then quickly apply the second one, do not press too hard with a brush. To smooth the border between the layers, walk after the gouache has dried along the border with a clean, damp brush. Lead her in one direction.

Step 5

Next, draw in the dark spots and spots in the picture. Let the gouache dry a little and paint intermediate colors between dark and light.

Step 6

Use the lightest colors in the final drawing. To achieve the desired shade when working with light colors, mix paints with whitewash on a palette until the desired shade is obtained.

Step 7

Move in the process of working from dark colors to light, from large strokes to the smallest. Do not forget to change the brushes for thinner ones.
