Rock music emerged at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as an offshoot of jazz. From the very beginning, it was protest music, and in order to learn how to play it, it is important to maintain a spirit of protest and a desire to create something new.
Instructions
Step 1
Listen to bands playing in this style. Do not give up on the "bad" songs: analyze each, identify the winning sides and successful finds of each musician. Write down the general formula of the song: when a particular instrument is turned on, when a solo begins, what techniques are used in it.
To create a general schema, first write out some particular schemas. If necessary, listen to the song several times to get all the details.
Step 2
Find the sheet music of your favorite musicians. Perform the songs so that you can understand in practice how they achieved this or that effect.
Music libraries for pianists, guitarists, singers and other musicians are listed under the article. Pick the songs you like best and play.
Step 3
Study general music theory: harmony, solfeggio, polyphony, music history. Do not rely on your distinctive talent: few have managed to become a professional performer without a solid theoretical background.
Add improvisation to these classics: play, composing on the go, in a predetermined harmonic sequence. The most popular sequences:
1.gold sequence (minor; chords from tonic to tonic, each chord being one fourth higher than the previous one);
2. Phrygian move (minor; chords on tonic, seventh, sixth and dominant);
3.jazz turntable (major; tonic, sixth, subdominant or second, dominant);
4. unnamed minor sequence: tonic, sixth, seventh, dominant.
Step 4
Compose songs or instrumental compositions after the pattern of your predecessors. As you play, pay attention to which chords or passages cannot be played. Change them without regret.
As you develop your performing and composing skills, increase the complexity of your pieces by adding new moves to shape your own style. The protest will be expressed in inconsistency with the canons of rock music itself.
