Previously, in every home and in every family there was a voluminous and roomy chest in which a variety of things could be stored - from tools and books to clothes and bed linen. A chest is a convenient and versatile space for storing anything, and covered with pillows or a blanket, it may well become an additional sofa or armchair. If you know how to paint or are proficient in decoupage techniques, your chest can turn not only into a functional storage space, but also into a stylish interior decoration. The design of the chest is simple enough to make with your own hands, without using any specific and rare materials.

Instructions

Step 1

In fact, the chest is a wooden box with a hinged lid. The size of the chest can be different - depending on your desire and free space in your home. To assemble the chest, you can take both thick good plywood with a thickness of 2 cm, and solid wood furniture board.

Step 2

From the prepared materials, make the front and back walls of the chest of the same size, and then the side walls and the bottom, having previously marked and drawn the parts on a sheet of plywood or wood, making sure that the measurements are accurate - all parts must be strictly rectangular, with angles equal to 90 degrees.

Step 3

Cut out the blanks for the walls and bottom with a jigsaw, and then sand the edges of the boards with sandpaper or a sander. Also, walk with a sander on the front sides of the future walls - this will give them a better appearance and simplify subsequent varnishing or painting.

Step 4

Connect the walls to each other using an open straight tenon. Carefully measure and mark the areas for the nests and spikes so that all the edges of the parts fit snugly together. Choose the spikes so that they fit tightly and with effort into the prepared sockets. Mark out the details for the tenon joints using a sharp pencil and square with a ruler.

Step 5

Make tenons and saw through the sockets and eyelets in the parts, and then join them using wood glue. Reinforce the parts with spacer clamps to avoid damaging the wood. Finish the assembly of the body by attaching the bottom - wood glue or self-tapping screws.

Step 6

To make the lid of the chest, make parts similar in structure to the newly assembled case. You will also need a “bottom”, which will be the top of the lid, and four narrow sides (no wider than 12 cm so that the lid is not too high). Using the spike technology, assemble the lid parts, tracking the accuracy and uniformity of all corners, checking them with a square. Secure the parts to the clamps.

Step 7

After the glue is dry, sand the surfaces of the chest, paying particular attention to the sharp edges, and polish its appearance to perfection. Place the lid on the hinges, attaching them to the body with self-tapping screws, and cover the chest with decorative impregnation or varnish.
