Surprised by the high prices for ready-made bedding? Do you have a custom size blanket? Want to sew something simple yourself? Try making the simplest duvet cover.
The easiest way to sew a duvet cover is if the hole for the blanket is on the side, since processing the hole on top is quite laborious for not very experienced seamstresses.
What fabric should I use to sew my duvet cover?
Choose thick cotton fabric, linen. If in doubt, consult a fabric seller, they usually have enough complete information about their product to give expert advice. Moreover, very often they can give advice based on their own sewing experience and the work of experienced craftswomen.
How to calculate how much fabric is needed for the simplest duvet cover?
Measure the comforter you are sewing the duvet cover on. To the length and width, add about 4 cm on each side to the seams. I also advise you to check with the store if the fabric of your choice will shrink after washing. If the answer is yes, I personally choose a different fabric.
When choosing a fabric, pay attention that its width is not less than the width of the blanket + 8 cm. In this case, you will need to purchase an amount of fabric that is equal to two blanket lengths + about 8 (10) cm.
Cutting and sewing the duvet cover
Actually, a special cut of the duvet cover is not required, since the simplest duvet cover is an ordinary bag.
Fold the purchased fabric face out, trim off excess fabric if necessary.
Example of calculation and cut of a duvet cover:
Sew the product on each side on a sewing machine, leaving about 35-50 cm. Turn the product out and sew the same seams from the inside again. Sew the hole with a bias tape, or simply tucking the edge twice (you can also sew a zipper into the hole instead of processing the edge). The duvet cover is ready.
If you wish, decorate the duvet cover with embroidery, applique, beautiful braid, or just choose a bright patterned fabric that does not require additional decor.
Please note that the above method can be used to sew a duvet cover on a blanket of any size (for both children and adults).
