If you've already mastered all the painting tools - from a brush and palette knife to a pen and an airbrush - take a closer look at household items. Some will help you to create pictures. For example, you can use the encaustic technique to draw picturesque canvases with liquid wax using an iron.

It is necessary

  • - colored wax / wax crayons;
  • - cardboard;
  • - iron.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your workplace. Cover the table with oilcloth or thick paper (a sheet of Whatman paper will do). Fold up paper towels or rags with which you will be cleaning the tools.

Step 2

Purchase wax painting tools. You can buy a special encaustic iron. It differs from the usual one in its small size, absolutely smooth sole and comfortable handle-stand. However, an ordinary iron is also suitable - the main thing is that there are no holes on its sole. It is convenient to use the old so-called travel irons - they are smaller and lighter than conventional irons, they can be turned over and placed on the handle, using as a heating surface for drawing. Also, in the online store or in the salon of goods for artists, you can buy cautery. This tool is a heating metal rod with nozzles of various shapes. It allows you to create small elements in wax drawings.

Step 3

You will also need a set of encaustic wax. It is sold in packs of multiple colors. However, regular wax crayons will do as long as they melt at low temperatures. Before starting work, make sure that the material is not toxic (a note about this should be on the package).

Step 4

Start drawing. Take a piece of cardboard. Its surface should be smooth and glossy. Turn the iron on at minimum power. When it warms up, turn it over and run it over the sole with wax. Fill about half of the surface with color. The layer must be dense enough. Turn the iron over and slide it over the cardboard in a slow sliding motion. You will have an even streak of color. To make smooth transitions of shades, melt several wax colors on the iron and run them along the cardboard not only forward, but also down or in the opposite direction - changing the direction, you mix the colors.

Step 5

To make lines on a cold layer of color, draw across the cardboard with the side of the iron. Also, small details can be removed with the nose of the iron (if you have not purchased a cautery for such work). If you do not move the iron evenly, but touch it to the paper several times and remove it, picturesque traces will remain on the sheet - their shape is individual, you can control it with a little experience.

Step 6

You can also paint directly on the soleplate of the iron. Turn it over and place it on the handle. Apply wax to the surface, and on top, place the cardboard and gently slide it to the side. Or put the cardboard on the iron and, when the paper heats up, draw directly on it with wax crayons spreading from the temperature.

Step 7

When the drawing is ready, the wax is frozen, polish it with a dry cotton cloth, this will make the picture glossy.
