Clothes are definitely best bought with the person wearing them. But this does not always work. For example, let's say you decide to make a surprise and buy a stylish blazer or a nice jacket. Buying something "by eye" is risky, especially if the item is expensive and of high quality. It is necessary to take measurements. The length of the shoulder in this case is far from the last meaning. This measurement may also be needed if you are knitting a sweater and you need to calculate the size of the armhole or raglan. You need to know shoulder measurements in order to model a sleeve on a blouse or dress that you are sewing.

Instructions

Step 1

Assess your body type. The figure, depending on the type of posture, can be normal, stooped or kinky. In each case, the measurement is taken a little differently. A stooped figure has the shoulders tilted slightly forward. Accordingly, the midline of the shoulder will also be slightly shifted forward. In a person with an overblown figure, the shoulders are thrown back, the midline of the shoulder is also displaced. With a normal figure, the midline of the shoulder runs exactly in the middle.

Step 2

Find the base of your neck. It is located where the midline of the shoulder meets the neck. Align the zero mark of the centimeter tape with this point. Run a measuring tape along the midline to the end point of your shoulder. Mark a point on the tape measure and record the result.

Step 3

The obtained measurement is enough to ensure that the purchased clothes do not sting in the shoulders. But if you are modeling a dress or a blouse and would like to hide some not very pleasant features of the figure, you can change the measurement. With wide shoulders, you can slightly shift the armhole of the shelf towards the shoulder, thus visually reducing the shoulders. If the shoulders are narrow and you want to increase them, do the opposite. Increase the armhole and, accordingly, the length of the shoulder. For clothes with shoulder pads, the measurement will be slightly larger than usual, depending on the thickness of the shoulder pads.

Step 4

When calculating the raglan, they act differently. Put your hand down. Find a point on the outside of the forearm in your mind, exactly opposite the armpit. Measure from this point to the base of your neck. For raglan, you also need to know the shoulder bevel. It is measured from the armpit to the clavicle.
