Sweet dates, seeds of which are germinated at home, are the fruits of the finger date. This is a dioecious plant with male and female flowers on different trees, so getting this palm tree to bear fruit in an apartment will not be easy. However, date palms look great as ornamental plants.
It is necessary
- - date palm seeds;
- - drainage;
- - sand;
- - peat;
- - sphagnum;
- - sod land;
- - leafy ground;
- - humus.
Instructions
Step 1
For home cultivation, the most often recommended Robelena date, a low-growing palm tree growing in several trunks. However, date palm seeds are more readily available. Ideally, planting material is obtained from fresh fruit, but since fresh dates do not tolerate transportation well, residents in areas where date palms do not grow will have to limit themselves to seeds extracted from dried dates.
Step 2
With some luck, date palm seeds can germinate without additional treatment, however, to improve germination, they should be scarified and soaked before sowing. It is recommended to do all this at the very beginning of spring.
Step 3
Remove the seed from the date and lightly file the rind with a nail file or sandpaper. Soak the scarified seeds for three days in water at a temperature of about thirty-five degrees. Change the water in the seed container to fresh water once every six hours.
Step 4
In a container with drainage holes, pour a layer of any drainage and a soil substrate mixed from equal parts of sand and peat. Some growers recommend sprinkling a layer of washed sand three to four centimeters thick over the soil.
Step 5
Plant the soaked date pits vertically into the ground to a depth of one and a half pit lengths. Cover the crops with sphagnum and place the container with seeds in a place where the temperature will be maintained at least twenty-five degrees. Water the substrate with lukewarm water.
Step 6
The seeds will take one to six months to germinate. When the first narrow leaf of the palm grows eight to ten centimeters long, plant the seedlings in separate pots about nine centimeters in diameter. Even if you germinated palm seeds in the first pot with a flower that came to hand, transplant the seedlings into separate containers. For planting, use soil mixed from two parts of sod land, part of leaf, the same amount of sand and humus.
Step 7
A date palm will require temperatures ranging from twenty-two to twenty-five degrees in the summer, sixteen to eighteen in the winter, and good lighting. Water this plant with warm water, settled for twelve hours. In the spring and summer, the plant needs watering three times a week. In winter, once a week is enough.
Step 8
Each year, a young palm tree will need to be transferred into a new pot, the diameter of which is two centimeters larger than the previous one.
