A jointer is a tool used for finishing large wooden surfaces as well as the edges of long parts. By its design, it is an elongated planer with a double knife, in contrast to which the jointer has a special plug in the front part to loosen the fastening of the knife in case of replacement or for sharpening, as well as a handle in the back.

Step 1
If you decide to make your own jointer, start by selecting the right material for the main part of the jointer - the pads. The best option is larch or oak. Their wood has high strength, density and resistance to decay. The optimum length of the jointer is about 70 cm. The dimensions of the knife in length and width are 200x65mm. A hardwood or oak block with dimensions of 700x76x70 mm will serve as a blank for a jointer. The handle height can be approximately 10 cm.
Step 2
You can cut the block with a hand saw or with a circular saw. Cut the hole for attaching the knife with a chisel and a hammer exactly in the middle of the block, while remembering that the slope of the back of the hole should be 45-47 degrees to its longitudinal axis.
Step 3
The place where the knife should be located is somewhat wider than the entire hole. In addition to the knife, install a clamping wedge in it. Insert the impact plug (button) approximately halfway between the edge of the knife hole and the front edge of the shoe.
Step 4
The handle for the jointer is recommended to be made of nine-ply plywood. Make the hole for the arm in such a way that it is convenient for you to work, while it consists of an upper part, which is located on top of the block, and a lower part, which fits into a specially cut groove and is rigidly bolted through the holes.
Step 5
You can find a jointer blade at your hardware store. It should be straightforward. Some jointer models may have two blades and two handles for added convenience.
Before starting work, check that the selected blade does not protrude more than 1 mm beyond the edge of the jointer sole.
