Finding or acquiring an old-fashioned sword is a great success. Well, what if the weapon had been lying in the ground for decades, in the basement or in the attic and lost sight. A high-quality restoration can cost tens of times more than the cost of the product itself. What if you try it yourself?

Step 1
Repair and restoration of edged weapons requires great care and knowledge of the characteristics of the metal. For example, the blade has large scratches. In this case, you can use fine sandpaper or a fine-grained whetstone.
Step 2
It is much more difficult to restore swords with more serious damage - potholes and corrosion. Here, using an abrasive power tool is extremely risky as the soft steel core can be damaged. In this situation, there is only one way out - polishing.
Step 3
When repairing a damaged blade, you should try to preserve its main elements as much as possible - the edges of the blade, the edge, the dol. There are some peculiarities in the restoration of samurai swords. At home, you can start polishing the blade with 600 grade sandpaper, gradually reaching 2500 and diamond paste.
Step 4
Finish polishing with green gouache applied to a piece of leather. The gouache should dry, but it is recommended to drip a few drops of water before polishing. The process itself is carried out with soft, uniform reciprocating movements. It is not recommended to use acid and rust remover to clean the blade.
Step 5
Light cleaning of the sword blade is best done with Johnson's wax paste. It is applied to the surface with a piece of cloth and as soon as the blade turns green, it must be wiped off with a clean cloth. You need to do this operation several times until the cloth after wiping is completely clean.
Step 6
Then a layer of wax is applied to the blade for 2 hours until it dries. After that, wipe it with a towel or woolen sock, which will give the blade a great shine. The remaining wax is removed with acetone. To further protect the blade from rust, it is recommended to coat it with a thin layer of crude oil.
