Artists value oil paints very much, because they can be used to convey the slightest shades. If you are just starting to learn how to paint, choose brushes and paints correctly.
Instructions
Step 1
All oil paints contain dry coloring pigments and an oil base. Cold-pressed linseed oil is most often used as the latter, it does not have a strong odor and has an interesting golden hue. Colorless poppy oil is used to create white and cold shades of paints.
Step 2
The pigments in modern oil paints are significantly more durable and vibrant than those used in the past. Moreover, they are also much less toxic.
Step 3
Oil paint pigments are transparent and opaque. The former give the paint depth and gloss, the latter have the ability to transmit light, but do not give the effect of depth. Transparent pigments do not lose their saturation when mixed, opaque pigments gray very quickly in the process of mixing different colors. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, artists used transparent paints, and from the second half of the nineteenth century, the Impressionists began to widely use opaque paints.
Step 4
A good oil paint always contains only one, but very concentrated pigment. In the composition of paints cheaper, several less intense dyes can be used.
Step 5
When choosing paints, always pay attention to the label. It should contain as much information about the product as possible. The expiration date, rules of use and information about the manufacturer must be present. The absence of this information may indicate a defective product.
Step 6
Evaluate the smell of paints before buying. It shouldn't be too harsh, unpleasant, or even repulsive. If you buy oil paints for children, look for completely odorless options, many modern manufacturers have begun to produce similar products.
Step 7
It is best to buy oil paints in cans, as this allows them to be used sparingly. It is sometimes quite difficult to remove the remaining paint from the tube.
Step 8
Choose colors that are natural. Acid colors may indicate that the manufacturer has used toxic pigments in the manufacture. Plus, aggressive, unnatural shades usually don't look good in a painting.
Step 9
In good paints, the pigment should be completely uniform. There should be no haze, stains or “lumps” of color in the paint. High-quality oil paint is very easy to apply to any surface and can be shaded with a brush without problems. Do not buy dried paints, their color may lie completely unevenly, moreover, traces of undissolved pigment may remain on the surface of the drawing.
