Rex Tillerson - American politician, US Secretary of State, nicknamed the Texas T-Rex.
Biography
Rex Tillerson (full name - Rex Wayne Tillerson) was born on March 23, 1952 in Texas. He spent his childhood in Oklahoma and Texas, where the bulk of US oil and gas production is conducted. Until 1975, he studied engineering at the University of Texas, where he was a member of a student fraternity, which only accepted Boy Scouts. Immediately after graduation, Rex began to actively pursue a career in the field at Exxon. By the mid-1980s, he had already become the head of the business development service in the gas department of the corporation.
Career
While at Exxon, Rex became Vice President of ExxonMobil in 2001 and served on the Board of Directors in 2004. Until 2016, he holds senior positions in this company. On December 14, 2016, the corporation announces its resignation and is replaced by Darren Woods.
One of the greatest achievements during his career with Exxon is reaching agreements to create an international consortium for the development of the Sakhalin-1 fields. And it was Rex who defended the interests of the corporation in the confrontation with Gazprom already in 2007. And in 2009 he provided the company with a multibillion-dollar contract for the production of liquefied gas.
Throughout his career, Tillerson has pushed for the lifting of the ban on US crude oil exports and the lifting of restrictions on the development of projects for the export of liquefied gas.
By the end of his Exxon career, he owns $ 240 million in ExxonMobil and has $ 27 million in equity income. According to Forbes magazine 2015, Tillerson is one of the most influential people in the world.
Political experience
In 2011, Tillerson makes political donations with personal funds. The amount of more than 42 thousand dollars went to the funds of the Republicans. Already in December 2016, Tillerson was named the most likely candidate for the post of US Secretary of State. And already on December 6, 2016, Trump is holding a personal meeting with Tillerson. However, the United States was concerned that a person familiar with Putin was applying for the post of secretary. Indeed, it was Tillerson who, of all Americans, most often communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
U. S. Secretary of State
Tillerson was nominated to the post of US Secretary of State by Donald Trump on December 13, 2016. The appointment was supported not only by Trump, but also by Robert Gates (former Secretary of Defense), Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The question is compounded by the fact that Marco Rubico was initially opposed and that would have been enough to block the appointment. However, Rubico later changed his mind and on January 23, 2017, Tillerson's candidacy was approved by a majority vote. On February 1, 2017, he was approved in office.
Despite fears that Tillerson has ties with Putin, it was he who repeatedly stated that sanctions against the Russian Federation would be lifted only after the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine and Crimea. Now he supports the version of the guilt of the Russian authorities and their involvement in the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, while the US presidential administration did not support this version.
Throughout his tenure as Secretary of State, Tillerson had serious disagreements with Trump. The president largely reacted to his messages via Twitter, which was seen as a humiliation of Tillerson. Trump also sharply criticized his proposals for the Iranian nuclear program.
His career as Secretary of State ended on March 18, 2018, when Donald Trump, without prior consultation, announced Tillerson's resignation via Twitter. John Sullivan became the acting secretary of state. Tillerson officially resigned on March 31, 2018.
