Each hand-knitted product assumes the use of needles with a specific number. However, not all knitting accessories (including crochet hooks) are individually calibrated on their surface, which makes them difficult to use. The ability to independently determine the number of knitting needles will help the needlewoman avoid mistakes in the future.
It is necessary
- - knitting needles;
- - calibrator for spokes;
- - ruler;
- - bobbin thread (up to 10 cm).
Instructions
Step 1
Knitting needles are an unpretentious tool for hand knitting. There are many different knitting needles, which are subdivided into straight (2 pieces or 5 pieces) and circular. Straight lines, in turn, are long and short, as well as with two pointed ends or with one (there is a limiter on the second). Circular knitting needles are usually short and connected with a fishing line, which relieves the load from the knitter's hands. It also allows for more comfortable knitting and fitting. However, all knitting needles are united by the fact that they have a set calibration, which makes it possible to accurately reproduce the proposed schemes and patterns.
Step 2
The thickness of the knitting needles is fundamental when choosing a knitting tool. It is designated by a specific number that reflects the real diameter and is measured in millimeters. For example, needles # 3 have a diameter of 3 mm, and needles # 10 have a diameter of 10 mm. When choosing knitting needles, pay attention to the country of manufacture (they have their own calibration), as well as the conditions suggested in the knitting instructions. To avoid confusion, there is a table of spoke calibration in different countries, which would be nice to have for work
Step 3
There are several ways to determine the spoke number. Ideally, it is advisable to purchase a needle calibrator, which is a plastic stencil or ruler. They have round holes of various diameters, with the size indicated next to them. In order to correctly determine the number, insert a spoke into the hole, which should pass freely and not get stuck. During calibration, proceed with caution, without exerting physical effort. Otherwise, after erroneous manipulations, the holes can expand over time, which means they lose their accuracy.
Step 4
If you do not have a calibrator at hand, then you can determine the number of the spokes with improvised means. Take a regular bobbin thread up to 10 cm long. Grasp the needle with the thread and twist its ends tightly. Then carefully unfold them and measure the thread with a ruler to the twisted fragments. Of course, this method does not give an exact result, since the obtained value may have a small error. However, this usually does not affect the quality of knitting.
