Keeping an aquarium in your home requires some knowledge. In order for its inhabitants to live comfortably, one must not forget to change the water, clean and control the biological balance.

Keeping the water clean

Water tends to evaporate, so you need to refill your tank periodically. Topping up water, as a rule, has to be done once a week and ordinary tap water is used for this purpose. When adding water to a cold-water aquarium, it should not be heated, but if a warm-water aquarium is installed in the house, then the water temperature must be appropriate.

Sometimes there are times when it is necessary to make a partial water change. Usually this procedure is necessary in order to restore the disturbed oxygen regime in the aquarium and involves replacing a third of the liquid contained in it. If the fish in the aquarium start to get sick, as well as if parasitic microorganisms are found in it, the water must be completely changed. However, this measure is extremely rare.

The cleanliness of the aquarium depends on the correct feeding of the fish. So, if such an amount of food is poured into the aquarium that its inhabitants cannot eat at one time, then, accordingly, its remains will be the cause of water pollution. Based on this, fish should be fed no more than twice a day, while there should be a strictly defined amount of food. To prevent contamination, the aquarium should be cleaned twice a month using a siphon.

Caring for aquarium plants

Do not neglect the care of the plants, which so perfectly complement the harmony prevailing in the aquarium. Darkened leaves on aquarium plants must be torn off periodically, and the aquarium flora should not be allowed to grow too much. You should also clean the underwater stems and leaves from the dirt that accumulates on them. Transplanting plants, so as not to disturb their root system, should be as rare as possible.

Sometimes the aquatic plants that grow in the aquarium can rot and shed their leaves. This is usually due to a lack of lighting. If it is noticed that the roots of the plants have begun to rot, it is necessary to resort to a complete water change and thoroughly rinse the bottom sand. As practice shows, the most common causes of diseases in aquarium plants are a sharp change in water temperature and a lack of illumination.
