The basis of the future picture depends on the material on which the work is to be done. For painting, choose hemp canvas or linen, which are very durable. They have a grainy texture, which will help to diversify the methods of overlaying strokes and the thickness of the paint layer.

Flax fibers have increased strength and resistance to weathering. The high coefficient of abrasion allows this material to retain its original grain size.
Step 3
For paintings that are small in size (up to one square meter), choose a fine-grained linen canvas with tightly woven threads. For paintings of medium size (more than one square meter) - medium-grained. For large pieces, a coarse-grained canvas of increased strength is required. It should be woven with double strands.
Step 4
When choosing a canvas, pay attention to the weaving of the threads. It should be even, uniform and free of knots. Thread skips and breaks are not allowed. For tutorial work, choose a canvas with medium threads.
Step 5
You can use burlap as the basis for the canvas. Because of the well-pronounced relief texture, it is good to write large-format sketches on it. It should be clean and well washed. Don't go for burlap that is too thin.
Step 6
When choosing a canvas, it is necessary to take into account the manner of writing. A fine to medium grained base is suitable for thin layer painting. Stronger and thicker base - for textured, pasty painting. The discrepancy between the basis and manner of writing will lead to premature aging of the work.
Step 7
The new canvas needs to be washed to remove impurities that were introduced during its production. They can have a negative effect on the paint layer.
Step 8
You cannot paint on a blank canvas with oil. It is absorbed into the base and overeats it. Over time, the canvas will become brittle and shatter. Therefore, it must be primed.
