- - foam (any material with sufficient buoyancy)
- - container with water
- - magnet (in any house there are many types)
Instructions
Step 1
Cut off a small piece of Styrofoam (at worst, at least a piece of wood will do).
Step 2
First you need to magnetize the needle with a magnet, and then demagnetize one end of it by heating it. Please note that if you heat the needle too much, then you need to demagnetize it completely (the property of magnetism disappears at temperatures from 70 degrees Celsius).
Step 3
Pierce a piece of Styrofoam with the needle so that the Styrofoam is centered on the needle.
Step 4
Place the resulting structure in a container (saucer or cup) with water.
Step 5
The magnetized tip will indicate the direction to the magnetic north pole of the earth (remember, it is different from the geographic one).
