A compass is not such a thing that can be found in every home, but making one yourself is not difficult. From the improvised means that everyone will probably have, you can make the simplest compass that will allow you to determine the cardinal points.

Step 1
Take a small piece of foam or foam the size of a matchbox. It will act as a substrate for the compass needle, which should be made from any needle. Instead of foam rubber, you can also use foam. The main thing is that the material from which the substrate will be made does not sink in water and is light.
Step 2
Now you need to magnetize the makeshift compass needle on one side and demagnetize it on the other. If you don't see magnets in your home, look around. You will find that on cabinet doors, the magnet can be found in the latches that hold the doors closed. In addition, a magnet can be found in any audio speaker, which is one of the main components of the speaker. It is not necessary to pull out the magnet. Just hold the tip of the needle over the magnet for about a minute - this will be enough to magnetize it.
Step 3
The next step is to demagnetize the other end of the needle. This can be done with fire. Use a lighter, matches, or a stovetop to slightly heat the tip of the needle (opposite to the one that is magnetized).
Step 4
Pour water almost to the brim into a cup, deep dish, or any other non-metallic container and lower the pad and needle onto the surface. Under the influence of the laws of physics, the needle will turn in such a way that one end of it will look to the North and the other to the South. As you might have guessed, the magnetized end will point North.
