Split shelves with zippers give the jacket a modern look and make it more comfortable to wear. With this simple but practical fastener, you can create a high stand-up collar that will easily slide over your head and still fit your neck well. To make a zipped jacket look neat from the front and back sides, it is recommended to use a double placket for sewing it in. Another knitting option will be the so-called hollow elastic.

- - cotton threads to match the sweater;
- - contrasting threads;

- - sewing machine;
- - scissors for removing basting;
- - zipper along the height of the shelf.
Instructions
Step 1
When sewing a sweater, immediately calculate the width of the right and left shelves exactly in order to leave a margin for a knitted strip for sewing in a zipper.
Step 2
When calculating the cut elements, do not forget that there should be space between the future slats for metal or plastic teeth and the free play of the slider. Of course, a zipper of a suitable size should be prepared well in advance.
Step 3
Before making a zipper placket, be sure to tie the sample with a front stitch 10 cm long. Measure the distance from the bottom of the jacket to the upper edge of the collar - this is the length of the future placket. Accurate calculations will help you to correctly type the loops along the edges of the product.
Step 4
Turn the work over and from the seamy side of the jacket, dial the loops for the lower layer of the plank. Knit it using the front piece as a reference. Close the last loops.
Step 5
Similarly, make a double plank on the right edge of the shelf. All details must be worked absolutely symmetrically! The placket should neither constrict the hem of the sweater nor assemble it into unattractive gathers.
Step 6
Open the zip and slide the halves into the double placket. Baste the fabric of the fastener with a contrasting thread from bottom to top.
Step 7
Open and close the bent lock - if it lies down correctly, you can sew a zipper to the sweater with whitewash threads to match the sweater and fasteners. This can be done by hand with a blind stitch or a machine stitch. Carefully remove the basting with nail scissors.
Step 8
A decent alternative to the double plank is the hollow elastic. It is no less convenient for sewing in a zipper on a knitted garment. For the elastic, calculate the required number of the dialed loops according to the model of the front surface. Multiply the resulting number by 2. For example: if there are 15 loops in a 10 cm long knitted pattern, then only 30 loops should be cast for a hollow elastic of the same length.
Step 9
In the first row of the hollow elastic, do the following alternations: 1 front loop; the next loop is removed untied. In this case, the working thread is always in front of the loop!
Step 10
In the second and subsequent rows of the hollow elastic, the removed loops must be knitted with the front one. On the other hand, knitted stitches in the previous row are removed untied. Follow the plank pattern until you reach the desired width.
Step 11
Start sewing the zipper to the jacket from the bottom of the work. Gradually loosen small areas of the hollow elastic from the knitting needle. Insert the corresponding section of the fastener into the opened part of the strap. Sew on open loops: the needle should go through the front open loop through the zipper fabric and exit through the open loop from the wrong side of the garment.
Step 12
Keep working until you have sewn on all the zipper. This will neatly close the open edge of the hollow elastic and at the same time sew the zipper to the placket. All you have to do is sew the final joining stitch on the sewing machine.
