Most of the garments have fasteners such as buttons, Velcro, snap fasteners and popular worldwide zippers. If you are sewing a skirt, you will need to sew a zipper into it. Also, from time to time, the fasteners break, so in order to continue wearing the skirt, the zipper in it needs to be altered. This can be done either with an ordinary sewing machine foot or with a special zipper foot.
Instructions
Step 1
Attach the zipper foot to the sewing machine, then take a blank of your skirt and baste the zipper by hand on the right side of the zipper cut. Mark the zipper from top to bottom, retreating from the teeth by 0.3 cm.
Step 2
Then, from the bottom up, baste the second part of the zipper to the left edge, stepping back from the fold of the skirt by 1 cm so that the edge of the fold overlaps the left side. Make sure that the zipper is swept symmetrically and that the product is not overtightened or puckered.
Step 3
Sew the zipper with the sewing machine, and then remove the hand basting threads. Tuck the bottom edge of the zipper into the product.
Step 4
Sometimes the zipper does not need to be sewn into a new product, but altered, replacing the broken fastener with a new one. If this is the case, measure the broken zipper and purchase the same type and size from a fabric supply store.
Step 5
Using a ripper or nail scissors, gently pry off the old zipper from the skirt. Throw away the broken zipper. On the right side of the garment, mark a stitching line by hand basting, and attach a new zipper to the seam so that the teeth are visible from the outside.
Step 6
Baste the zipper with contrasting thread, or pin with tailor's pins. Using the special foot, sew the zipper from the right side, starting from the bottom end, and then remove the threads of the basting and pull the pins holding the basting out of the fabric.
Step 7
You can also sew on the zipper using an ordinary foot, guiding the stitching a few millimeters away from the zipper teeth.
