Instructions
Step 1
Use a measuring tape to determine the length of the zipper you will be replacing. Buy a new zipper from a sewing supply store. Please note that it must match the old one in length and shape. But you can buy the one that, in your opinion, is better and stronger than the old one. Immediately check if it unfastens and fastens well, if there is any marriage.
Step 2
Unclip the old zipper on the garment. It is worth taking a closer look at how it was sewn. This will help you figure out how to sew on the new zipper.
Step 3
On the front side of the product, use chalk to draw a line along which you will sew the zipper. Attach it to the seam so that the teeth are barely visible. Having decided on the correct position of the zipper on the product, mark it with a bright thread. If you are experienced in sewing, you can use safety pins to secure the zipper in place.
Step 4
Begin sewing the zipper to the garment. This can be done manually. However, it is difficult to sew neatly and firmly in this way. It's easier to do this on a sewing machine. Modern sewing machines have special feet for sewing on zippers. These feet are very convenient if you need to sew in a hidden zipper. However, in the absence of such a foot, use the usual one, only keep the zipper open when sewing. Sew the zipper from the right side of the garment. It is better to start sewing from the lower end of the zipper. When you finish sewing, check how smooth the seam is, whether the fabric has gathered. If you find any defects, rebuff the zipper and sew it again.
Step 5
Remove the bright contrasting thread or pins you used to secure the zipper while sewing. Sewing a zipper into small items is not an easy task. Such delicate work will require patience from you.
