Compositions of flat lay images on social networks have appeared for a long time. But, despite this, they still do not lose their popularity, they inspire. However, the creation of such photographs only seems easy. In fact, in order for the picture to be original and harmonious, you need not only imagination, but also adherence to certain rules.
Technical highlights
You don't have to have expensive equipment for a good shot. Flat lay can also be done on a regular smartphone. However, it is recommended to make special camera settings. First, switch it to square display mode. This will help to immediately identify the flaws in the composition. The shooting angle, as you know, should be 90 degrees, that is, the camera should be kept parallel to the plane on which the objects are placed / unfolded. Secondly, you need to use color filters and brightness / sharpening controls.
Invisible lines
Flat lay photos are characterized by slight carelessness, chaotic composition. But if you look closely at the work of professionals, you can see the connection between the elements. They are arranged in a specific order. This puts the most important subjects closer to the center of the frame at the same distance.
Arrange your subjects diagonally to add dynamism to your shot. In the settings of the smartphone there is an option "Grid" - marking the image, dividing it into 9 equal squares. This will help you position the items correctly. Remember to keep the same distance between them.
A color scheme
Harmony should be present not only in a flat lay composition, but also in a combination of colors. Cold shades go well with cold shades, and warm shades with warm ones. But sometimes you can find a balance in the combination of two elements, if one complements the other.
Also, when creating a flat lay, you should adhere to the 60:30:10 rule. This means 60% of the composition is given to the main color, 30% to the additional and 10% to the accent spots.
Daylight
This is the golden rule, which assumes soft, even light, without shadows or glare. All successful flat lay shots were taken during the day (but without direct sunlight).
History
Flat lay is not just a set of elements, but following a certain theme. This is a mini-story in one shot, so all objects in it are interconnected. For example, telling a beach novel, you can combine themed clothes, shoes, objects (sun cream, sunglasses), a palm leaf on a sandy background.
The background is also of great importance. You can, of course, use white or any other color. But today, original textures or, again, themed backdrops with meaning are in vogue. They also complement the picture (but do not dominate), affect the overall mood. Imitation of silk, wood, stones, sand can be in your digital arsenal. Add them in a photo editor and the perfect flat lay is ready.
