The guitar is a musical instrument that warms the soul. However, playing an old or cheap instrument can be so awful that not everyone can handle such melodies. Not all experienced guitarists know that you can get rid of string rattling by straightening the neck.
It is necessary
A guitar, a metal plate or an ordinary building ruler at least half a meter long and a screwdriver
Instructions
Step 1
Inspect the guitar and check to see if the instrument has a truss nut (neck deflection adjuster). Typically, it is found either at the base or on the headstock. Anchor is a kind of metal rod that is located along the neck of the instrument and makes it possible to adjust its tension.
Step 2
Determine the deflection of the guitar neck. Check the truss rod. If it is loose, the neck of the instrument has too much deflection and this, as a rule, makes it difficult to grip the strings at some frets. If the truss rod, on the contrary, is overtightened, then the guitar strings are accordingly too close to the frets and will rattle, clinging to them. In both cases, the bar should be straightened. To do this, do the following.
Step 3
Remove all strings. Place the instrument on your knees as if you were going to play it. Take a long metal ruler or plate and place it in the very center of the guitar neck along its length.
Step 4
Check the available distance between the first fret and the ruler. In the event that this distance is more than 0.2 mm, loosen the anchor slightly. If this distance is more than 0.5 mm, on the contrary, tighten it. It is clear that these numbers are inaccurate, and they can vary in one direction or another depending on your preferences and the thickness of the guitar strings.
Step 5
After adjusting, take a screwdriver and tighten or loosen the nut on the guitar, which is responsible for tensioning the anchor. In this case, you should know that its tension bends the bar up, and the weakening, on the contrary, bends down. Be careful, these actions must be performed with extreme caution, making no more than ¼ turn of the nut, observing and checking the angle of the neck deflection each time. The important thing here is not to miss the ideal position.
Step 6
Compare the distance from the bar to the ruler on multiple frets. In case the distance is not very different, put the guitar down and let it lie down evenly for 2-3 hours.
Step 7
Check the distance from the bar to the ruler again. Put on the strings when the neck is fully straightened to suit your preference and enjoy playing.
