To decorate the interior or hold a holiday, as well as for thematic photo shoots, you may need volumetric letters of different sizes. They are easy to make with your own hands from foam. The letters will be light in weight and easy to use. They can, if desired, be additionally decorated or left as they are.
Making volumetric letters
Pick a word or phrase and write it in a computer program or manually in the desired font. Try not to use a very complex font, it will be difficult to cut it out. Make mock letters on paper. Lay out the foam that you plan to use to make the letters in front of you, and try the models on to the individual pieces. If you plan to leave the letters without additional external decor, then try to cut them out from a single piece.
Styrofoam sheets can be purchased at art stores and home improvement stores.
Use a ruler and marker or felt-tip pen to convert your letter layouts to Styrofoam. Cut the blanks with a sharp knife with a long, hard blade. Sand the edges first with a knife and then with sandpaper.
When cutting the letters out of the styrofoam, keep the knife blade perpendicular to the plane.
If the foam had large grains, during the cutting process, large imperfections in the form of deep grooves could appear, which cannot be sanded off. Tear newspaper sheets into small pieces and glue them all the letters in an even layer. Coat with PVA glue. After the papier-mâché has dried, sand all surfaces with sandpaper and prime. Next, you can decorate the letters as you like.
DIY letter decoration
Styrofoam letters can be painted with acrylic paint. When using other paint, be careful not to dissolve the styrofoam. It is most convenient to work with a sponge, not a brush. This will apply the paint more evenly. If the letters are very large, use a foam roller.
Letters will look original if they are decorated with self-adhesive film. It is sold in different colors and textures. Find the one that best suits your business.
You can decorate the foam letters with a regular Christmas tree garland. Secure it with transparent tape along the outline of each letter. Be sure to keep an outlet or extension cord nearby.
For home decor, letters around the perimeter can be decorated with LED strip. You will get a kind of night light.
Wrap the letters with colored woolen threads. First stick double-sided tape on the foam, and then apply the thread in even rows. You can use one color, or you can make the letters multi-colored.
Decorating with foam letters
To decorate the room, use a styrofoam lettering. Use foam ceiling tiles to make it. Cut out the desired word or phrase from it. Select a suitable frame to fit the text inside. Decorate the baguette and underlay to match the style of the room. Paste the word with a glue gun.
For original winter photo shoots, decorate the foam letters with knitted hats.
