Burbot belongs to the cod family. Its weight can reach up to 30 kg. Burbot mainly lives in the Central and Northern part of Russia (most of them are located in Siberia in the Ob and Irtysh rivers). Burbot can reach up to 1.5 m. His eyes are very small, and he has antennae on his chin. In general, it looks like a catfish. The color of this fish can range from dark green to black.
Basically, burbot lives in cold and clean water. He loves to swim in deep holes that are in the shade. Burbot hides under stones or snags (these are his favorite places). The water temperature should not exceed 12 ˚С, if it gets higher, then he looks for more favorable places for life or goes into hibernation.
Burbot feeds on gudgeons and ruffs. It is a nocturnal predator, and it lures small fish with its antennae.
All autumn burbot wanders in search of food. It can be found anywhere. Only when the rivers freeze completely does its zhor weaken, and it becomes under the ice. So burbot spends several days until it gets used to new conditions. Then again this fish comes to life and starts looking for food for itself.
Burbot produces a large number of eggs, but that only a few of them can develop. Most of the fry become prey for predatory fish.
