Double elastic is one of the tightest types of knitting. It keeps its shape perfectly, practically does not stretch during washing. Therefore, this pattern is often used to decorate collars and cuffs. Belts are also knitted with it. When knitting skirts and trousers, the waist line is made with this pattern, which allows you to insert a linen elastic or a bodice without a seam.

Step 1
To complete the pattern, dial the number of loops on straight knitting needles twice the calculated one. Add 2 edging. This pattern is usually performed on straight knitting needles. An experienced craftswoman can try to knit it in a circle, but this requires a lot of attention. Pull out the knitting needle, remove the hem and knit the first row with a regular 1x1 elastic.
Step 2
Turn the work over, remove the edging. In the second row, knit the front loops with the front loops, and remove the purl loops, leaving the thread before work. Knit in the same way. After a couple of rows, you will notice that you have a double canvas. From both sides, the knit looks like a hosiery from the right side. You need twice as many threads for such an elastic band than for another straight tight knit.
Step 3
Tie the canvas to the desired height. In the last row, knit the front stitches of both layers together. If this is not done, the edge of the elastic will be stretched and ugly. You can close the loops in any way convenient for you - crochet, knitting together the first with the second, or pulling one loop into another.
Step 4
To make a hole for the elastic, step back 3-4 loops from the edge on the wrong side. Make a straight yarn over. In this case, you need to knit the next or previous 2 loops on the front, which with this type of knitting will not work in the usual way. Therefore, remove the next front loop on a pin, then remove the 2 purl on the right knitting needle, put on the left loop from the pin so that the 2 front loops are next to each other. Tie them together. Repeat the procedure at the end of the row.
Step 5
Double elastic can be knitted in a circle. It is not very convenient, but it is possible with some skill and sufficient accuracy. Cast on double the number of loops compared to the calculated number, but without edging. Knit the first row with a 1x1 elastic band. In the second row, knit the front ones and remove the purls. In even rows, do the opposite. Remove the front ones, knit the purls, but make sure that the working thread is between the layers all the time. It is very important to remember exactly where the row starts. Mark this spot with a different color of thread. Make the holes for the elastic band in the same way as on the straight knitting needles.
