The task of drawing a desert can be daunting. After all, a picture in which there is nothing but sand and sky is unlikely to be interesting. However, there are deserts with quite varied vegetation and unusual landscapes. This combination will help to preserve the atmosphere of loneliness and spaciousness in the drawing and at the same time attract the viewer's attention.

Instructions
Step 1
Lay a sheet of A3 paper horizontally. Approximate but outline the location of all objects on its surface and the volume of each part of the drawing. Divide the sheet into four equal parts with horizontal lines. The lower one will represent the visible border of the earth on the horizon. From this space, separate 2/3 of the parts that fall directly on the surface of the earth, the remaining 1/3 are occupied by mountains.
Step 2
Fill the left part of the sketch with the tops of the mountains, gradually losing height towards the right side of the sheet.
Step 3
Build the shape of each cactus. They are cylinders slightly tapering upward. For the foreground cactus, draw six vertical centerlines next to each other - each of which will have a “branch” of the plant. At the top and bottom of each of the axes, draw a horizontal line and draw an ellipse on it equal to the width of the cactus trunk. Note that the bottom ellipse will be slightly wider than the top one. Connect the side faces of the shapes, sketching out the outlines of the thorn. Make it curved in several places to make the sketch look like the irregular shapes of a real cactus. Erase the auxiliary lines for construction with an eraser. Use the same principle to sketch the rest of the cacti in the background.
Step 4
To balance the composition, which is still filled on the left side, sketch out the clouds in the upper right area. Here, the lines should be very thin so that the graphite does not subsequently shine through the paint layer.
Step 5
Use watercolor to color the drawing. Start filling from the sky to paint a towering cactus on it. Take a wide brush and paint a deep blue-blue color over the entire sky, except for the clouds. Distribute the color from the upper left corner with wide strokes and with a clean brush, blur it at the horizon.
Step 6
Immediately add just a tiny bit of light ocher to the still-dry sky above the lowest part of the mountains.
Step 7
Add volume to the clouds by adding touches of blue-gray around their perimeter and in the dark areas in the center.
Step 8
For areas of the desert filled with low plants, paint over with a mixture of grass and ocher. Add some cool blue to the sandy color of the soil.
Step 9
For mountain painting, use a mixture of dark brown, ocher in highlighted areas, and smoky blue in the shadows and at the foot. Blur the borders of the flowers.
Step 10
Make the cactus brown-green, and then apply a mixture of dark brown with indigo on the main shade, and emphasize the light side with a little brick and light yellow.
