Decide which canvas is best for your purposes. It is a mesh fabric. In stores, cotton canvas is most often found, but sometimes you can also find linen. It can be white or colored. There are several types of this material. For embroidery on thin fabrics, an overlay canvas is most suitable, that is, one from which, after the end of the work, the threads are removed. The ready-made base is also popular, it remains in the product. For other types of embroidery, stramin, sulta and hardanger are also used. They are also suitable for cross stitching or tapestry. For miniatures, silk muslin is more suitable.

Aida canvas is most suitable for a beginner needlewoman. For this canvas, the easiest way is to calculate the quantity, since each weave corresponds to a stitch. Aida comes in different sizes, in the store you will definitely find a number on the price tag.
Step 3
Consider the diagram. Counted embroidery patterns are made in such a way that one square corresponds to one stitch. Count the number of vertical and horizontal stitches. Next, calculate the length and width of the embroidery in centimeters using the formula L = k / n, where L is the length or width in centimeters, k is the number of stitches on the desired side, n is the canvas number. Now you know how much canvas will be directly below the embroidery.

Calculate the total amount of canvas. The size of the allowances depends on what the embroidery is for. For example, if you are going to embroider a picture, which you will then stick on a mat, you need to add 5-6 cm to each side. To decorate an embroidered shirt or a bag, a 1 cm allowance is enough.
Step 5
Russian-made linen canvas does not always have a number. In fact, this is just a rare weave of linen. It is more suitable for products where the size of the embroidery is not particularly important. The stitch is done not through one weave, but after two. Count the number of vertical and horizontal stitches in the chart. Multiply both numbers by 2. When buying, specify how many weaves are per 1 cm on the warp and weft. Calculate the amount of canvas according to the scheme L = k / k1, where L is the side length in centimeters, k is the doubled number of stitches, and k1 = the number of stitches in 1 cm.

Calculate the size of the allowances. They should be slightly larger than when working with cotton canvas, since linen shrinks very much during washing. If you are going to use linen fabric as a basis for decorating clothes, bedding or table linen, it must be processed in the same way as any other linen fabric, that is, washed and ironed.
