Any pattern, regardless of what it is intended for, is a combination of lines, shadows and colors. After carefully examining patterns for embroidery, lace chips or ornaments for wooden products, you will see that they have a lot in common. For arts and crafts, you can take a ready-made pattern, but it is better to come up with and draw it yourself.

Instructions
Step 1
Determine what you need the pattern for. This will determine which elements need to be drawn, as well as materials. If it will be part of a drawing on paper or, say, an embroidery ornament, determine its place on the sheet. It can be located in any part of the sheet or are part of the frame. The color scheme also depends on the purpose of the pattern. The outline of the embroidery motif will be solid, but you should be well aware of the color combinations. Lace chips or woodcarving patterns should be self-contained in a solid color. Think about which elements can be used as additional ones. They must match the style. If you are going to draw an ornament, think about what combinations of elements will be repeated.
Step 2
Come up with the main elements of the pattern. For floral ornaments, these will be leaves, berries, flowers. Choose an algorithm for their location. Perhaps the elements will need to be connected with stems with some additional elements. For a geometric ornament, draw circles, squares, triangles. Arrange them in different order on a small piece of paper and see what happens. Choose the best option. Geometric shapes can be connected with each other by various types of straight lines. It can be a dotted line, a broken line, or just a straight line. Try several line variations.
Step 3
Arrange the elements of the pattern on a large sheet in accordance with the algorithm that you came up with. Connect the parts of the drawing with different lines, if necessary. If it seems to you that the drawing is not finished, supplement it with suitable elements. Pre-mark in the picture a place where they will look good.
Step 4
If the pattern is part of an easel drawing, finish it in the same technique that you use for the drawing itself. Outline a pattern that is a sketch for embroidery or other types of needlework with a felt-tip pen, then transfer to fabric or wood.
