You need to choose a varnish used in decoupage, depending on how the object to be decorated will be used later. The choice of such varnishes is quite large.
Instructions
Step 1
If kitchen utensils are decorated with decoupage, which will not stand idle, but will be used and in contact with food, you need to choose a harmless decoupage varnish for the topcoat. For those products that will be in constant or frequent contact with water, used and located in damp rooms, it is better to choose waterproof varnishes. The hallmark of a good varnish is how it dries. High-quality varnish does not leave streaks and cracks, evenly on the base, does not turn yellow over time, does not have a sharp repulsive odor.
Step 2
With the help of varnish, you can achieve certain effects on the product. For this, there are patinating varnishes, special rainbow varnishes - with a double or even triple gloss. The varnish can be matte or glossy. A volumetric effect can be achieved using special water-based clearcoats. There is varnish in spray cans, which is applied to certain parts of the composition, thanks to which the picture acquires volume and a convex structure. By mixing matte and glossy varnishes together, you can get the effect of a satin surface. By applying a few coats of diamond polish to the base, you get a marble-like surface. Often, decoupage varnish also plays the role of glue: the cut motifs are attached to the surface of the object to be decorated.
Step 3
Environmentally friendly type of varnish is water-based acrylic varnish. They are non-flammable and odorless; they are used in rooms for interior work. The elasticity and strength of these varnishes is high, and the original appearance of the wood, its texture is well preserved. An insoluble coating is provided by polyurethane varnishes. Such varnishes have good adhesion to almost all materials - to wood, leather, plastic, fabrics, metal, plaster. The polyurethane varnish is resistant to fresh and sea water, retains its gloss for several years. When coated, it creates a film on the product that has high wear resistance and mechanical strength. Water-based polyurethane varnishes are modern paints and varnishes. Having all the advantages of acrylic varnish (environmental friendliness, lack of smell), they also retain the advantages of polyurethane solvent-borne varnishes - abrasion resistance and strength.
Step 4
Oil varnishes can also be used for decoupage. The main components of the composition of such varnishes are vegetable oils, resins, organic solvents. Drying, the varnish leaves a hard film of light yellow or dark brown color on the product. Any color can be chosen and depends on the components of the varnish. Depending on atmospheric conditions, oil varnish dries for several hours or several days, longer than all other varnishes.
