When hunting for a goose, it is very difficult to do without a decoy (hunting whistle). It can be purchased from the hunting store. But electronic decoys are not cheap, and plastic ones, perhaps, are of little use. Therefore, hunters often independently make decoys in two ways - from brass sleeves or bones.

How to make a decoy out of brass sleeves

Making a decoy with your own hands from brass sleeves with primers is not difficult at all. This will require two hunting sleeves of the 28th and 32nd calibers. First, cut the smaller sleeve by 10 mm on the cut side. Then punch additional holes on them. To do this, you need to make a small cut on each sleeve at a distance of 10 mm from the cut.

Gently press them together with a vise. When doing this, do not forget to put pieces of felt between the sleeves. Twist a ring out of the wire and place it between the sleeves. Then it will be possible to thread a lace through it to avoid losing the semolina.

The next step is to tape the sleeves to each other or solder together with the ring. The second option is preferable. Now pick up the wine corks. Their diameter must match the diameter of the sleeves. Cut a small piece from the corks. After that, the sleeves should be sealed with plugs. In this case, it is necessary to maintain a three-millimeter gap between the wall of the sleeve and the cut off section of the plug, as well as the parallel arrangement of the sleeves.

If everything was done correctly, you will have a twin whistle with a specific sound. By moving the plugs inside it, you can change the key. For effective use of such a decoy, you should blow into both sleeves at once. Usually the reaction of geese to such a decoy is downright fantastic.

Making semolina from a bone

If you have already successfully hunted with one decoy, you can make an alternative option from the leg bone of a killed black grouse or wood grouse. First you need to saw off the head of the bone with a special file. Then scrub the inside and rinse in acetone to degrease as much as possible. Now you can start processing. Be sure to chamfer the edges of the sound hole.

After that, insert the softened wax crumb into the base of the resulting semolina, carefully slide it over the sound hole and squeeze it a little. Two small sticks should be used for pressing. Now take a couple of needles - thick and thin. They will be needed to make an air channel to the hole. It is necessary to achieve a certain key, so you should periodically check the sound of the decoy. It is recommended to make the air duct with a flat base.

Finally, thoroughly clean the inside of the hunting whistle from any residual wax and shavings. It is advisable to have a working decoy on hand so that you can compare their tonalities and achieve the correct sound of a new object.
