It is necessary to determine the depth of water in the lake both during fishing and during some research work, in particular, when planning environmental measures. Depth measurements largely depend on the technical capabilities and maximum depths of the reservoir.

Instructions

Step 1

One of the most accurate ways to determine the depth of a lake, like any body of water, is to use an echo sounder. A correctly tuned echo sounder gives detailed information about the structure of the bottom of the reservoir, depth differences, and the presence of holes. The information is automatically updated as the vessel moves along the surface of the lake, depending on the depth.

Step 2

If such a technical device as an echo sounder is not available to you, and the depth of the lake does not exceed several tens of meters, use available means to measure the depth. Tie a cord to the rod, on which you must first make notes in the form of pieces of twine or colored rags of fabric. Marks should be made at regular intervals, for example, every half a meter or a meter. Hang the weight at the free end of the cord. The depth of the reservoir at the point of measurement will be equal to the number of marked sections of the cord that have gone under the water.

Step 3

Another method also involves using a cord. On a long cord at regular intervals, make small loops, to which you tie or hang on hooks a special float made of a wooden bar. The dimensions of the bar must be such that the float can withstand a small load afloat. At the same time, the load must be heavy enough to hold the float in contact with the bottom of the lake.

Step 4

Attach the float at a certain distance from the load, for example, 3 m. Throw the float into the pond, holding the end of the cord. If the float floats, then the depth of the lake in this place is more than 3 m. At a shallower depth, the load will sink to the bottom, and the float will stay at the place where the measurement is made. By installing the float on various loops made on the cord, you will get an idea of the depths in a given section of the reservoir.
