"Nautilus Pompilius" is one of the legends of Russian rock, a group that emerged in the 80s in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) and in a short time conquered the whole country. Unfortunately, "Nautilus Pompilius" suffered the fate of many popular rock bands: a meteoric rise, huge success and the ensuing disintegration. Nevertheless, the best songs of "Nautilus" have not lost their popularity to this day.
The history of the legendary group "Nautilus Pompilius" began in 1978. At this time, students of the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute Vyacheslav Butusov and Dmitry Umetsky created a rock group called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Initially, they performed at dances, performing songs from the repertoire of foreign groups. In 1982, the first album appeared, in which there were songs written by Butusov.
The name "Nautilus" originated in 1983. It was invented by the band's sound engineer Andrey Makarov. In 1985, Ilya Kormiltsev, who came to the group, suggested changing the name to "Nautilus Pompilius", since at that time there already existed a considerable number of groups that bore the name "Nautilus". In the same year, the album "Invisible" was recorded, which included, in particular, the song "Prince of Silence", which subsequently gained popularity.
At the top of popularity
Loud fame and recognition of listeners and critics was brought to the group by the album "Separation" recorded in 1986, which included such famous hits of "Nautilus" as "This music will be eternal", "Casanova", "View from the screen", "Khaki ball", "Chained by one chain". At the same time, an unforgettable style of the group arose, the elements of which were the obligatory military uniform, original make-up and unusual plastic.
In 1987 the song "I want to be with you" sounded for the first time, which for a long time was considered the hallmark of the group. 1988 is considered the peak of popularity of the group "Nautilus Pompilius". Then, thanks to numerous tours, the wave of "nautilusomania" swept literally the whole country.
End of the legend
As often happens, it was on the wave of commercial success that relationships within the group began to deteriorate. As a result, one of its founders, Dmitry Umetsky, left Nautilus. Soon, Butusov himself came to the conclusion that his group did not fit into the format of Russian show business. In November 1988, he made the difficult decision to disband the Nautilus.
At the end of 1989, Vyacheslav Butusov moved to Leningrad, where he recruited a new line-up of the group. If in the first line-up of "Nautilus" the emphasis was on keyboards and saxophone, now the sound of the guitar has come to the fore. The new style initially turned most of the old fans away from the band. However, after the release of the albums "Random" (1990) and "Foreign Land" (1992), "Nautilus Pompilius" regained its former popularity. There were also new high-profile hits - "Walking on the Water" and "On the Bank of a Nameless River".
Nevertheless, in 1996 Vyacheslav Butusov realized that Nautilus had exhausted itself and decided to finally disband the group. On June 5, 1997, a concert was played in Moscow, which received the name "The Last Voyage", then there were farewell tours around the country, and the group broke up. So the legend ended …
